Because of all that's happened, Bob is somewhat depressed and need uplifting. The trick is that Bob isn't answering the phone in the room and takes time really think straight because of all the medication. He's still smart as every but he has to think about what he's doing and put a major effort into responding. Now I can make him more comfortable and get anything he wants for movies, frozen food and company, but he's sleeping all the time and he can't watch a movie or talk for long periods of time. He's pretty ill and wants this whole part of it to be over. He'll debate the depression but as a family, we know Bob and know that he's not "himself". He's still got faith and that's important. I would imagine that the depression can best be defined as "Just waiting it out" and not applying a major effort to get physical.

In my opinion, with everything that is happening, I think it's a pretty smart move except for being completely distant from an effort. It's hard too because I think that he's putting in an effort but it's so hard to do things for him right now that the benefits are minimal at best in his mind. He's got to get out of bed soon or pneumonia will set in. Then that's a whole new thing to contend with.

Additionally he now has Graft Versus Host Disease which is an almost guaranteed side effect of the transplant. It's a good thing in disguise they say. One of the things that is happening inside Bob is the new immune system is attacking the old immune system because it sees it as a disease. The new immune system can also see Bob's heart, lungs and any organ as a disease and try and destroy it as well. So there is a world war type of event happening within Bob's blood system right now. This is on top of the depression. So if you can pray for Bob, please do. It's a crucial time right now for him and he needs all the prayer's he can get.

Hello everyone. Thank you for staying updated by reading this update page. Bob's feeling pretty ill right now. His blood cell counts are good so the transplant seems to be working. He had a week of sleep depravation that was caused by having to get up every 15 to 30 minutes. The drug Lasix was being used to shed off water and fluid retention. Though it's effective, it caused Bob to lose an entire week of sleep. I mean the whole week. So now it's extremely difficult for Bob to get up and walk around. It's important for him to do so too because he's becoming or actually becaome deconditioned to his regular physical abilities. He's been in bed for over a month.

Tomorrow will be one year from when Bob was diagnosed with AML Leukemia. He hasn't been able to sleep much because of some of the side effects related to the transplant. Basically he's been prescribed Lasix which sheds fluid weight. You can't have extra fluid weight because it collects around the lungs and causes infections. Sleeping is important because we need sleep to repair ourselves. It's getting rougher every day. Next week I'll have more about the sleep loss. It's really getting to him now.

Bob is starting to feel the side-effects of getting the transplant. He's getting tired more often isn't really in the mood for much. He's pretty up beat though. He's just praying for it all to be done with and to come home.

Bob's got' his transplant from a donor today. He's feeling pretty good right now and just wants to get home.

In the past few days at some point we got the news that Bob has a donor. Actually 2. One of them is available in late July and the other is available early August. The August one is a better match but the July one is available sooner and we need sooner so it will be the match we want. The transplant is scheduled for 7-20-2006.

graft versus host disease

Pronunciation: ( graft vĕr¢sus host diz¢ez) An incompatibility reaction (which may be fatal) in a subject (host) of low immunologic competence (deficient lymphoid tissue) who has been the recipient of immunologically competent lymphoid tissue from a donor who lacks at least one antigen possessed by the recipient host; the reaction, or disease, is the result of action of the transplanted cells against those host tissues that possess the antigen not possessed by the donor.
